Tara Oceans: discovery of more than 100 million genes from the marine world

The Tara Oceans expedition (2009-2013) collected plankton samples from all over the world’s oceans onboard the schooner Tara, and established catalogues of species and genes on a scale never before undertaken. Continuing the analysis and exploitation of the largest database on the planktonic ecosystem, CEA, CNRS, EMBL and ENS teams, among others, have just reached a new milestone by analyzing the expression of more than 100 million genes belonging to complex organisms ranging from microscopic algae to small planktonic animals.
